reed profilers
Our profiler is constructed of anodized aluminium. It is made in our shop with
the same degree of care we put into our bassoons and is designed to last
a lifetime.
The barrel is 6 inches (150 mm) long, making it suitable for contra
reeds as well. It is 1.2 inches (31 mm) in diameter which prevents the
edges and wings of the reed from lifting and being profiled too thin,
and allowing the cane to be profiled after shaping if so desired.
Alignment marks are etched onto the barrel to ensure the cane is in the
middle of the barrel.
A spring in front of the blade prevents the cane from rising up to
the hold down bar. The hold down bar is set on all machines to the
thickness of the 'chip' of cane that is removed on each pass of the
blade - usually .004" to .006" (.1 to .15 mm). Without this spring the
profile can vary by that much.
The guide rod is hardened steel and reciprocating ball bearings in the
carriage make the travel very smooth. The carriage is sloped in its
travel (to the average taper in a reed) so that when the flats on the
end pins are used to create a "spine " in the profile, the spine stays
well centered in the profile.
Two templates are included with each machine, and adjustment of the
thickness of profile is accomplished by adding or subtracting shim
washers. The thinnest washers I provide are .002" (.05 mm) thick
allowing for profile adjustments of .001" (.025 mm) increments.
Recent improvements include a carbide blade manufactured from microfine carbide. One blade is included with each machine, which should give years of service without sharpening.
